Hi,

Has the distributor been moved or removed?

Do you still have the "Prestolite" ignition system, or has a lot of changes gone on under the hood over the years?

(Do you know what I'm talking about?)

'76- '78 used Prestolite, '79 - '86 used "Motorcraft"

Both can be tested.

See SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 30TH, 2019 AT 6:52 PM (found at the bottom of answers)

Here' the link where to find that post:

Return with news, we can continue if that did not help.

If it was running after the distributor was reinstalled,

Have you tested the module? Or tried a new one?

Had the ignition control module tested twice 5 times each at AutoZone. Both times it passed the test. I still purchased a new ignition control module and even had them teat that one. All passed. Still no spark out of coil. Went thru all of the steps still have 12.2 volts at Battery but on 6.6 volts at positive side of coil ignition switch on, when cranking 8.5 volts. I have replaced the starter solenoid. Test coil and it passed. Could it still be the coil or pickup inside of the distributor? This is why I like points and condensers. Old school.

Thanks

Before we go any further, let's try a really simple test, usually it's the first thing I try anytime I have a no start situation. This let's me know whether I have a fuel problem or an ignition problem right from the git-go! This all being before breaking out the diagnostic stuff.

So

Let's either shoot a 1-2 second burst of starter fluid down the carburetor throat.

Or

Dump 2 teaspoons of gas down the carburetor throat.

I stress doing any of this, gas or ignition stuff outside the garage or away from the house or other vehicles. Nothing like having no where to live because your vehicle would not crank up.

Have you a 1st line of defense (a big soaking wet towel to throw over the carburetor)

A 2nd line of defense, a 5 pound fire extinguisher (messier, but will save the day!)

Does it spit, sputter, pop, try to start up with the introduction of fuel into it? If so, this may be a fuel issue and not an ignition problem.

At this point, is it fuel or ignition that we pursue?

Let's try some pics! One day I'll make better ones.

Pic 1) good circuit-continuity

pic 2) bad circuit- no continuity

pic 3)Test 1- black ground to distributor body

pic 4) Test 2 - distributor pick-up coil

pic 5) explanation pic

What are the symptoms now?

Let me know, so we can keep going.

Sounds like it is the pick up.

You are sure this is Motorcraft, using this type module below?

I think Omix-Ada markets just that piece (without getting a whole distributor) Let me know, I'll see If I can help find one.

Thanks for finding the part. Purchased today and installed. Still no spark no start. I have attached a pic of the new ignition control module and distributor. Still lost since the unit was running. Hoping to get this running. Thank you for all of your help. I know it's difficult doing this over the internet.

No pics of your Jeep?

It sure didn't take many responses before yours was up and running!

Glad it's back on the road!

I was proud of my '46 Willys (and all of my "5"s) from day one!

"Willy" was a "field find" right beside an old tractor.

Last pic) My daughter recently threw him a party, she was four when we found him. Willy taught her how to drive when she was 8.
