Okay, I was driving, and it happen to be about 100+ degrees out, anyways I drove about 40 miles when my instrument cluster went weird the speedometer and RPMs and the temperature gauges all stopped working and at the same time my indicator lights for the brake, ABS, and seat belt all lit up and stayed that way. Well, I drove about 10 miles after that stopping and going but I knew if I shut it off it probably wouldn't start again, and when I got to my friends, I shut it off and won't crank or start. So, I've checked all fuses, relays, and even took a multimeter to some wiring and grounds everything's fine. So, I went and took a jumper wire to the starter, so I directly hit the starter and it cranks and it even started for about 2 seconds and shut off, so I ordered a new PCM and I got it, and that's not it either same thing, I can run a jumper to the starter and crank and starts for about a second then shuts off, what's going on? I also hooked up the OBD reader and it gets all the way to 100% then tells me it can't communicate with the car and tells me to check to see if it's on the on position and the dlc. So, that's all fine, can someone please help, because I bought a PCM for no reason.

Hi,

When you say you took a jumper wire to the starter, are you doing that at the starter motor or the starter relay? Also, and I doubt this is the issue because you said it cranks, but what you described happening sounded like the battery was getting weaker and weaker. Have you confirmed the alternator and battery are good?

As for the communication issue, I need you to check two things.

On the DLC, pin 16 should have 12v power at all times. Confirm that this is the case. Pins 4 and 5 should provide a ground path. Check them for continuity to ground. (See pic below)

Also, there is a main ASD relay located in the relay box near the power distribution box under the hood. That will prevent the engine from running if it has failed. It shuts the fuel system down. Check that as well. Also, here is a link you may find helpful for testing a relay. (see pics 2 and 3).

The more I think about how this happened, I really feel it was a voltage loss issue. These vehicles are very sensitive to voltage changes. If it gets low, all kinds of things happen. LOL I miss the old days. When you jump it now, does the starter sound weak or does it sound normal?

Let me know what you find.

Take care,

Joe

Alright sir, I tested the data link and since I have a charger connected to the battery cause all of this is pulling volts, but it's reading out 13.37 volts and the grounds are both good also. As for the relay, I'm not jumping the starter from the relay right from the battery to the starter to made sure it cranked over and I just did it again and it started but shut off as soon as the fuel that made it to the intake. Runs it then shuts off, but even though I should be able to use the key and turn it over, so what do I do now?

Hi,

Yes, I agree. The starter is triggered by power from the TIPM (totally integrated power module). It isn't uncommon for them to fail. They jammed too many small pins into connectors, so they corrode and break.

I attached the starting circuit wiring schematic below, so you have a reference. What I need you to do is check to see if there is a signal out from pin 8, connector 10 at the TIPM.

If there is no power, then we need to scan the can-bus. The starter circuit incorporates computer data wiring in the circuit.

CAN stands for controller area network. This type of scan will retrieve codes regardless of the module storing them.

Here is a link that explains how it's done:

Let me know.
