Thanks for the reply.

I will try to put some lubricant. And just to confirm, the Bank 1 Sensor 1 is located on the back side of the engine, right?

Hi,

Usually when O2 sensors shows a malfunction, cleaning seldom works.

Before replacement, diagnosis should be carried to eliminate the possibilities of wiring or other factors causing the problem.

It is a 2.3l california emissions, I've had a pesky check engine light off and on for the last couple of months. I had a diagnostic done and was told I need to replace the B1 S2 sensor. After scouring the web I can't get a solid answer on where the sensor is located. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi Have 2001 accord, 4dr, 4Clynder, model. Got error codes P1166 and P1167 indicating O2 sensor issue. How do I know which one, Bank1 or 2 and if Bosch aftermarket sensor is good enough for replacement. Thanks!

Those are both codes for Bank 1 A/F sensor heater. See diagnostic chart below

DTC P1166: A/F Sensor (Sensor 1) Heater Circuit Malfunction

1. Reset the ECM/PCM.
2. Start the engine.

Is DTC P1166 indicated?

YES - Go to step 3.

NO - Intermittent failure, system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose wires at C102 (located under the under-hood fuse/relay box), A/F Sensor relay, the A/F Sensor (Sensor 1) and the ECM/PCM.

3. Check the following fuses:

- POWER SEAT (20 A) fuse in the under-hood fuse/relay box.
- No.4 ECU (ECM/PCM) CRUISE CONTROL (15 A) fuse in the driver's under-dash fuse/relay box.
- No.6 LAF HEATER (20 A) in the passenger's under-dash fuse/relay box.

Are any of the fuses blown?

YES - Repair short in the wire between the A/F Sensor relay and the fuses.

NO - Go to step 4.
4. Measure voltage between ECM/PCM connector terminals B19 and B20, 30 seconds after the ignition switch is turned ON (II).

Is there battery voltage?

YES - Substitute a known-good ECM/PCM and recheck. If the symptom/indication goes away, replace the original ECM/PCM.

NO - Go to step 5.

5. Measure voltage between ECM/PCM connector terminals C13 and B20.

Is there battery voltage?

YES - Go to step 6.

NO - Go to step 10.

6. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
7. Disconnect ECM/PCM connector B (25P).
8. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
9. Connect ECM/PCM connector terminal B16 to body ground with a jumper wire, then measure voltage between ECM/PCM connector terminals B19 and B20.

Is there battery voltage?

YES - Substitute a known-good ECM/PCM and recheck. If the symptom/indication goes away, replace the original ECM/PCM.

NO - Repair open or short in the wire between A/F Sensor (Sensor 1) and ECM/PCM (B19).

10. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
11. Disconnect ECM/PCM connector B (25P) and the A/F Sensor (Sensor 1) 4P connector.

12. Check for continuity between A/F Sensor (Sensor 1) 4P connector terminal No.3 and body ground.

Is there continuity?

YES - Repair short in the wire between the A/F Sensor (Sensor 1) and ECM/PCM (B19).

NO - Go to step 13.

13. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
14. Measure voltage between ECM/PCM connector terminals B16 and B20

Is there battery voltage?

YES - Repair open in the wire between the ECM/PCM (C13) and the A/F Sensor (Sensor 1) or Secondary HO(2)S (Sensor 2).

NO - Go to step 15.

15. Check for continuity in the wires between A/F Sensor and the fuses.

Is there continuity?

YES - The wires are OK. Replace the A/F Sensor relay.

NO - Repair open in the wire between the A/F Sensor relay and the fuses.

The corresponding diagrams are attached below

Okay,

Chances are that either the sensor was loose and came out, the pipe rotted out and it came out or the threads are defective in the pipe.

I'm replacing the exhaust, from sleve (that is in-between the manifold and the cat) to the back. I have the cat disconnected and it is attached only by the o2 sensor wires. Does the o2 sensor unplug or do you need to remove the nut at the base (there is no room to get a wrench on it with any leverage) The sensor appears to have three seems where it might pull off/unplug, but I have been unsuccessful in seperating it by pulling on it with a vice grip. I am about to mark the wires and then cut them and then splice them back together.

I live in Minnesota and there has be nothing about this exhaust removal that has been easy. To start I'm doing it with jack stands and really wishing I had a lift. I'm replacing the Cat because I stripped the nuts on the back of the Cat even after WD 40 and a torch. I'd just cut the bolts with a die grinder, but the bolts are welded into the cat. So the nuts have to come off or you need to buy a new catalytic converter. Nice!

Everything on the web is very matter of fact in the description or removing the cat. With vivid descriptions like "disconnect the o2 sensor from the converter" or it is not mentioned at all. Disconnecting the sensor is either so simple that it warrants no explanation or the other left that out to frustrate a weekend mechanic like me.

With me a picture is worth a 1,000 words where does it unplug? And if that nut at the base has to come off is there a special tool and what does the tool look like.

My check eng light came on - AutoZone says it is code P0141 - heater for bank 1, sensor 2 oxygen sensor is bad. This car only has two sensors - one on either side of the cat. Hanes manual shows a 3rd sensor at the bottom of the exh manifold - I'm 100% positive there is no sensor there. Which O2 sensor should I focus on?

You have two sensors. What Haynes is referring to is for V6 application (3 sensors). Bank 1 sensor 2 is the one after the cat. Before you replace the sensor, check and make sure that the wiring is not damaged. If you don't see any damage on the wires, then replace the sensor. Bosch PN 13176 or equivalent. Here is a guide to help walk you through and the oxygen sensor locations in the diagrams below.

Thanks Zackman!

I checked the rear sensor and it does have a bad heater circuit. I ordered a replacement Denso since that is what was installed. Thanks you very much for your input!
