This might be kind of long but I’m going to explain exactly what happened when my car messed up. The other day my boyfriend jump started someone and right after he did it the car started running badly, wouldn’t hardly go and was popping. We bought a code scanner and scanned the car for codes and it gave us the multiple misfire code. Well we were driving home and he kind of slammed on the brake and it started running fine for a while. It eventually started doing the same thing again and then it would start running fine for a bit. It kept doing that the next day too. But now it seems like since it started running bad again this last time it hasn’t gone back to running fine anymore it’s just constantly popping and doesn’t want to go when you step on the gas. So my question is, where should we start to try to fix this? And was it a coincidence that it messed up after he jump started someone? I can also post what the freeze frame data says on the code scanner if I need to. Thank you for your help with this.

Good morning,

Yes, please post all the code numbers and the freeze frame data.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/engine-misfires-or-runs-rough

How long since it had a good tune up with plugs, coils?

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-tune-up-a-car-engine

Was there any issue when he hooked up the jumper cables?

Can you upload a video of the popping for me?

I just want to say thank you for helping me with this. I have some pictures of the freeze frame data and I also have the video you requested. We just changed the plugs but have not changed the coils or the housing. Sorry for all the duplicate images.

Okay, good. When we do tune ups on these, we replace the plugs, coils, wires and the cap. I bet the cap has black marks all over it.

So you think we should start there? Sounds good to me. I will update you after we get that changed. But should we change coils first and then housing or all at once?

Here’s an update all we did last night was took the ignition housing off and looked at the coils then we put it back together because we couldn't buy anything from the parts store because it was closed and then put it back on the car. Got in it this morning and it drove perfect for about 10 minutes then we turned a corner and it went to shift started running rough the temperature gauge which was at normal temperature right before this dropped down about 10 degrees. The check engine light came on and started flashing and the trac off light came on. Makes no sense to me.

Yes, it does.

You need to replace those parts as I suggested. The cap is the one that is leaking electric and causing the misfires.

Replace the parts and keep me updated.

Could an ignition coil work sometimes and sometimes not work?

It can work all the time but what is happening is the electric from the coil is not getting to the plugs because the electric is leaking or arcing out in the cap. Electricity takes the path of least resistance.

You need to replace the parts I suggested.
