2001 Mercury Sable A/C compressor

When belt is shot does it ALWAYS mean compressor has to be automatically replaced, or can you do one at a time.

Not necessarily, depends on if the belt simply wore out or if the compressor caused it to fail. If compressor caused it to fail then the compressor will need replaced. If belt just worn out then you can replace belt. If there are no noises coming from compressor and no suspected faults that caused belt to break then no need in replacing compressor
