Local shop tells me that belt is bad as car has been making noise and that entire a/c compressor must be replaced. Is this correct? Couldn't belt be replaced immediately and compressor later?

This depends on if the compressor is locked up or not. If the compressor is not spinning, then the belt will just break due to the pulley not spinning, it is locked up. So, the belt will not be able to turn it and it will overheat and snap the belt.

So can you let us know if the compressor is locked up and we can go from there.

If it is, then the only solution would be to replace it or bypass it with a smaller belt or a bypass pulley.

Please run through this and let us know what is happening and we can go from there.

Thanks
