Transmission problem
1997 Mercury Sable Front Wheel Drive Automatic

I have a sable that most often will not shift out of "park" unless I open the hood and jiggle the cable end under the hood. This would be where is connects to the transmission. It is not sloppy. Could the cable be stretched?

If it's what I think it is, it's likely your brake switch is defective. It is a small device that fits on a round bar extending off the top of the brake pedal. When you push on the pedal, it releases the switch, so you can shift. They are about $12 at any Autozone, take a picture of it before you disconnect the little green spring wire that holds it all together, it can be a pill to put back together without a photo to reference. Not hard to install, just a pain if you've never done it before.
