When I start the car, the shifter won't move out of Park and the brakes seem mushy. I can trick it by putting the key at "accessory" and shifting to Neutral to start the car and it drives fine. But no brake lights. I've checked some fuses that the manual said to check, put more brake fluid in. No lights telling me what's wrong. What's wrong?

The park lock system is run by the brake light system. If the brake light switch is bad, it will not come out of park. You see, when the brakes are applied, the switch sends a signal to the park lock solenoid telling it to release from park. If the switch doesn't send the signal, the solenoid won't release. Have the brake light switch checked and replaced if needed. I feel it will most likely take care of the problem.

Let me know if it works.
