Driving at 75 mph, engine stopped. After sitting 40 minutes at side of the road, the engine restarted and ran normally.

Also, after driving home 23 miles, I stop and go into a store. Upon returning 3 minutes later, the engine will not start. After sitting 30 minutes, it restarts and runs normally.

The car temperature gauge reads normal, but the problems only seem to occur when the car engine is hot.

I suspect this is something to do with a faulty sensor that shuts down or reacts erroneously when a certain temperature is reached.

I have a few questions. First, has the check engine light ever come on? Second, have you been able to check for spark and fuel to the engine when it won't start?

Let me know.

Joe -

The engine light comes on.

The ignition turns the engine over, and occasionally it starts to catch a little, but won't start.

I am never in a place with instrumentation - either the side of the road or a parking lot.

Based on your description, it sounds like a bad fuel pump. If the engine is trying to start but can't, chances are it isn't getting gas at that time. Here is the "How To" for checking fuel pressure.

https://www.2carpros.com/how_to/how_to_check_fuel_pressure.htm

Also, get a can of starting fluid and keep it in the car. When this happens, see if the car will start (at least for a few seconds) with the starting fluid.

Let me know what you find.
