Semi-consistent Starter Problem

Hi, I have a 1992 Mazda B2600i 4x4, 4-cyl, 2.6L, 5-spd Manual Transmission, 300,000Km.

This truck is great, has been well maintained it's whole life. Recently (since 290K) it has developed an odd starter problem, and it seems to be restricted to cold starting. It did not do it very often in the summer, maybe twice, but as the weather is cooling, when I start the truck in the morning for the first time, the starter does it thing, but doesn't engage the engine. Rather it gives a moderate grinding noise, at which point I disengage the starter.

I try a couple more times with the same result, the odd try also giving a clunk (like it engages the motor briefly). After a decent clunk, the next try usually engages and starts the engine as though all were well.

This will go on at any stop (where engine is killed) until the engine reaches normal temperature and then will start perfectly every time afterwards (as long as it isn't more than 2 hours or a good cool off in between starts).

Any ideas? I thought missing teeth on the flywheel, but would give me the same problem hot or cold.

Maybe a sticking gear on the starter shaft, spinning before getting a chance to engage, and a few tries gets it moving enough to work properly?

Not a mechanic, but mechanically competent, got my manual and would like to fix this.

Thanks,

Scott

It sounds like the battery is getting weak but to be sure please go over this guide

Here is more information on the problem.

It sounds like you've put some thoughtful consideration into diagnosing the issue with your 1992 Mazda B2600i's cold starting problem. While I can't diagnose the issue definitively from a distance, I can certainly provide you with some insights and possible solutions based on your description.

Your suspicion of a sticking gear on the starter shaft is a valid one. Here are a few things to consider and steps you might take to diagnose and potentially fix the problem:

Starter Solenoid or Bendix Gear: The starter solenoid is responsible for engaging the starter gear (Bendix gear) with the engine's flywheel. If the solenoid or Bendix gear is sticking, it might not engage properly on cold starts. Over time, components can wear or become sluggish, causing the issues you're experiencing.

Starter Inspection: If you're mechanically competent, you might consider removing the starter for a closer inspection. Look for any signs of wear, damage, or sticking components. Pay special attention to the Bendix gear, the starter solenoid, and the gear engagement mechanism.

Flywheel Inspection: While missing teeth on the flywheel could potentially cause these symptoms, as you mentioned, it's less likely if the problem is specific to cold starts. Still, it's worth inspecting the flywheel teeth to rule out any issues.

Starter Rebuild or Replacement: If you find any signs of wear, damage, or sticking components, you might consider rebuilding or replacing the starter. A reputable auto parts store should be able to provide a rebuilt or new starter for your Mazda B2600i.

Lubrication: Sometimes, a bit of lubrication can help free up sticking components. Make sure to use a lubricant that's appropriate for the application (e.g., lithium grease).

Electrical Check: While the issue seems more mechanical in nature, it's still a good idea to check the electrical connections to the starter and solenoid. Corroded or loose connections can sometimes cause starting problems.

Ok, I understand it by nature of just wondering if this is a part I can test and confirm as the problem, and also a part that I can replace, or just new starter?

Thanks again,

Scott

I have the same issue, and replacing the starter did not fix it. It was a little better for a short time (a few days) but then it started back up again. Same issue. Cold starts the starter will grind against the flywheel and, more often with colder weather, will just spin in place, not even trying to engage the flywheel. I got a new battery and that fixed it FYI, thank you.
