1991 mazda 2.2 four cyl when I start it up it smokes bad - I ran it for 15 min and it was still smoking. I shut it off for about 30 mins then restart and no smoke what could it be. I ran compression test all cyl read 160!

They read 160 ( which is a little high ) most likely because the cylinders have oil in them which raises the cranking compression

It is a common problem in the 2.2L engine to have the oil rings seize in the piston's. This allows the oil to get past into the combustion area of the engine. Most times this allow the engine to have good compression but smoke. With these kinds of problems your probably gonna need a rebuild or replace

Not to contradict the other posts, But we owned four of those trucks between all my friends. My dad's used to smoke for about 10 minutes after you started it. Didn't matter what the weather was everytime it used to smoke, enough to block the road! Mine smoked a little bit at startup but once warm it stopped. I fixed mine by adjusting the valves.(Not something that is easy to do).
Now both my brothers trucks. They ran fine no troubles at all and I would have to say the average mileage (dad's was the lowest at 76000) was about 140000.

Although you might have been able to do that with your older b2200. The 1991 engine has hydraulic adjusters and are NOT adjustable.

FYI
