Drive belt squeaking for few days then breaks. Drive 1 mile, car overheats, water starts leaking, tow car to dealer, fix belt. Dealer claims thermostat now sticks, wants $1,600 to replace stat & intake manifold. I say no drive home, let car idle 2 hours no overheating. Could this be scam, intermitate sticking that hasn't happened yet, or possible manifold issue.

Those vehicles do have problems witht heplastic intake breaking and leaking. Take it to a ASE certified tech and have the cooling system pressure tested for leaks. The thermostat would be a good idea to replace since it got hot, that will mess with them sometimes, but if the intake is good, it should be considerably cheaper.
