1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4wd with 4.0 L-6 - My battery cables are seriously corroded and as a result my Jeep starts intermittently. The repair shop has quoted a price of $595 to replace them. They claim that due to the special "Y" negative battery cable, it is not possible to simply splice new terminal leads on. Is this true? If so, is $595 a reasonable price to replace both cables? I have found the parts on-line for ~$60, so even if the shop is charging me $100 for the cables, this is $495 for labor. How long of a job is this? Is this something a novice to moderate DIYer could handle? $595 seems crazy to me.
