Electrical problem
1994 Jeep Cherokee 4 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic

not sure it's electrical though.

the engine does not turn over when the key is 'cranked'. Have checked all wires / cabling / connections as is possible.

the battery is a few months old, all interior and exterior electrics work ok.

I'd have to make sure the battery has a full charge. 12.6 volts is a generic spec for a full charged battery. Did you try cranking in neutral? Next, I'd have to check the voltage circuits at the starter relay. Any testing, make sure the tranny is in park or neutral and the e-brake is set. Some of the national brand autostores will test the starter for you, yeah, you have to take it off and take it to them.

When you turn the key to crank, watch the dash lites, do they stay bright, go out, flutter, anything?

Thanks for the reply.

The temp guage goes flying off the end when the key is turned, all else lights etc is fine. The battery has been on charge for a little over a day, so should be fully charged. Did try cranking in neutral, just the same results.

No, there should be a reaction from the lites. Turn on the headlites, turn key to crank, is there any reaction from the lites, there should be a reaction? If the lites stay bright, don't do anything, there is an open circuit to the starter. If they dim considerably or go out, usually the battery or cables has a problem, can't rule out the starter itself. It's hard to do any testing without at least a digital voltmeter. That green or brown wire at the starter, should be hot with the key in the crank position. If it isn't, you have to backtrack the circuit.
