1989 Jeep Cherokee intermittant high RPM

To whom it may concern
my jeep runs at2000 rpm, sometimes at start up
this happens sometimes after driving, stopping and
restarting. If I turn vehicle off again for a couple of
minutes it starts at proper rpm.

Has the check engine light come on? It sounds like a throttle position sensor or an idle air control valve, but I can't be sure without a code from the computer. Also, you may want to check for vacuum leaks that can cause this and the EGR valve.
