2002 Jeep Cherokee Surges in RPM

RPM surges 200 - 400 RPM when traveling 50 plus MPH with no discernable change in MPH. The surges last for 10 to 20 seconds before returning to base level. Occurance is radom. What could cause this?

No - it is seems even more likely to happen after driving for a while.
