Hi stypejack, Welcome to 2carpros and TY for the donation

Lets do below and determine if its a fuel or spark issue and get back with some testing results. Note: Inertia switch is behind right kick panel for an XJ8 model-no info on your S-type Jag maybe at the same location try checking

Get a helper disconnect a sparkplug wire or 2 and ground it to the engine atleast 3/16 in away from ground have helper crank engine over-do you have a snapping blue spark? If so-you have a fuel related problem, check the fuel pressure to rule out the fuel filter/fuel pump/pressure regulator and listen to the injector/s are they pulsing or hook up a noid light. No snapping blue spark continue to troubleshoot the ignition system-power input to the coil/coil packs, coil's resistances, cap and rotor /distributor pick-up coil, ignition control module, ECM, Ignitor camshaft and crankshaft sensors and computer. Note: If it doesn't apply disregard it

Thanks for your help. Guess what, got the car as a non runner. Fitted a good battery swapped over a couple of relays for ones I new were ok (fuel pump and coils) and it started no problems at all. Been running a week or so now and very happy.
