Intermittent start problem

While driving the car will intermittently hesitate like starving for fuel as if fuel pump just quit. It only happens for 1/2 a second or so the car just lurches as if your foot slipped off the gas pedal. A couple of times it has been hard to start. By hard I mean as if not getting fire for several ignition try's then it starts. It's been happening for about 2 weeks and getting worse. The check engine light works but not on so I guess there is no codes. I'm thinking fuel pump maybe fuel filter because wouldn't anything else more than likely throw a code?
