If I scratch my head any longer I will not have any more fingernails! The system has charge, the clutch plate actuates well, the cooling fan seems to work but does not necessarily run with the compressor running. Bower works all the time. But, sometimes when I turn on the unit, it works, sometimes it does not. I just do not know what to do. Please any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Hi and thanks for using 2CarPros.com.

This could be the result of a few things. Take a look at this link. It describes possible reasons that the AC may not work.

Next, the blend air door may not be working properly and allowing the cool air to enter the passenger compartment. To better understand what this component does, take a look at this link.

Next, general maintenance should be taken with the system. Make sure the AC condenser, located in front of the car's radiator, is clean and free of debris.

If none of this helps, what you will need to do is check both the high and low side pressures when the system is not cooling. Here is a link that shows manifold gauges being used. The reason I suggest this is because there could be a blockage in the system. For example, if the low side pressure is too low and the high side is too high, there could be a blockage in the orifice tube or expansion block.

If you do check the pressures, let me know what the readings are and what the outside temperature is when you check. If you do not have the gauges, often times a parts store will lend them or rent them.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you have other questions and what you find.

Take care,
Joe
