Sometimes my car will be in high gear when it shouldn't be and then out of no where it will just shut off. I think it is a input output sensor from what I read online. But I am a girl and really don't know for sure. It does shift roughly sometimes. It also seems to shut off at around 55 mph I think.

Welcome to 2CarPros.

It could be related to a speed sensor, but that shouldn't shut the engine off. Is the check engine light staying on when the engine is running? If it is, you should start by having the computer scanned for diagnostic trouble codes. They will help narrow down the cause of the problem.

Here is a quick video showing how a scanner is used:

I realize most people don't own a scanner, but often times a parts store will scan it for you or rent one to you.

Let me know if the light stays on. Also, let me know if there is anything you can think of that may cause the problem to occur.

Take care,
Joe

Do you know what would cause it to stay in high gear or sometimes when I stop and start driving again. It is in high gear when I am stopped and start driving it is sluggish and showing it is in high gear. It is not shifting out like it should.

Oh also, when it shuts off randomly I have to turn key off and put it in park but it starts right back up after I do that.

Welcome back:

The shifting could be many things. The stalling could be related to a crankshaft position sensor. Is the check engine light staying on when the engine is running?
