Okay. First of all the clutch went out. I had it repaired, but when they were finished they couldn't get it started. So I go to the garage and establish that the battery is dead (yea I know). I hooked it up to the trickle charger at the garage and let it charge for awhile. What do ya know? It started right up! The next time I go to start it it wouldn't start. I guess I didn't give it time to charge. Now i'm noticing the immobilizer light is on. I have dealt with this before when I broke my key fob. So we try and jump it off and no luck! I have tried several times and no luck. Today I left it charging for almost an hour with the key on and still nothing. My battery was fried so I got a new one today and the immobilizer is still on. This has been going on for months now! I'm so frustrated and have spent more money trying to repair the clutch than I paid for the car. I only have one original key. But I did go get some blank uncut fobs thinking I could program them. I do believe I have my key programmed correctly. Since I put a new battery on it do I need to reset the ECM? Please help!

Hi,

Lets first determine that it is the immobilizer. I am going to provide emergency start directions. See if it starts when these directions are followed.

Note: If you replaced the switch, it will require VAGCOM software to reset.

2001 Volkswagen New Beetle GL (1C1) L4-2.0L (AVH)
Emergency Start Function, Activating W/O VAG 1551/VAS 5051
Vehicle Accessories and Optional Equipment Antitheft and Alarm Systems Testing and Inspection Scan Tool Testing and Procedures Immobilizer Emergency Start Function, Activating W/O VAG 1551/VAS 5051
EMERGENCY START FUNCTION, ACTIVATING W/O VAG 1551/VAS 5051
Emergency start function, activating without VAG 1551

Using the emergency start function, a vehicle with a faulty anti-theft immobilizer can be started and driven under its own power to a VW dealership.

Requirements
- Customer must provide proof of authorized vehicle operation/ownership with vehicle documents and identification
- Key tag with covered secret number is available.(If not "See Determining secret number"). Refer to "Lost Key Procedure", under "Starting and Charging/Starting System/Ignition Switch Lock Cylinder",
- Mechanically correct key available

- Switch ignition on.
- Press reset button for trip odometer counter in and hold for 10 seconds.

In the display for the trip odometer counter "0000" appears and the first digit blinks.

Using the reset button for the trip odometer counter, the first digit can now be moved from "0" through "9":
- Press reset button for trip odometer counter until valid first digit of secret number is displayed, e.G. "5"

In the trip odometer counter display "5000" appears.

- Press and hold reset button for trip odometer counter for 2 seconds to move to the next display and enter the next digit.

In the trip odometer counter display "5000" appears and the second digit blinks.

- Press reset button for trip odometer counter until valid second digit of secret number is displayed, e.G. "3".
- Press and hold reset button for trip odometer counter for 2 seconds to move to the next display and enter the next digit.

In the trip odometer counter display "5300" appears and the third digit blinks.

- Press reset button for trip odometer counter until valid third digit of secret number is displayed, e.G. "4".
- Press and hold reset button for trip odometer counter for 2 seconds to move to the next display and enter the next digit.

In the trip odometer counter display "5340" appears and the fourth digit blinks.

- Press reset button for trip odometer counter until valid fourth digit of secret number is displayed, e.G. "9".

In the trip odometer counter display "5349" appears (example).

- When all four digits are entered, press and hold reset button for trip odometer counter for 4 seconds to complete process.

If the valid secret number has been input correctly:
- trip odometer display is shown again in trip odometer counter
- warning light for antitheft immobilizer stays on

NOTE:
- The immobilizer system is now deactivated.
- Three attempts to input the secret number correctly are possible immediately. The next three attempts will not be possible for at least 10 minutes if the ignition remains switched on continuously during this time.
- After the secret number has been input incorrectly three times, and the ignition switched off, the control module is locked. "FAIL" appears in the trip odometer display counter in the instrument cluster.
- The waiting time between each set of attempts doubles each time to a maximum time of 255 minutes.
- If during the input procedure no key/button operation occurs for longer than 30 seconds, the emergency start attempt is interrupted.

- Switch ignition off and then start engine.

The emergency start function is not operable again and must be reactivated if:
- 5 minutes have elapsed since the ignition was switched off and the ignition key removed from the ignition lock.
- 45 minutes have elapsed since the ignition was switched off, but an ignition key remained inserted in the ignition lock.
- Upon beginning an adaptation function with VAG 1551.

Yea, I did the steps for resetting the security system. Nothing happened. The immobilizer light is still blinking. I will try the emergency start first thing in the morning. So if I get the emergency start to work, will the car function normal the next time I try to start it? Or what?

You guys suggested doing an emergency start, however I don't have the code needed. I bought the car from someone who isn't the original owner either. How do I get the code?

Hi,

If you don't have the code, you will need the vehicle taken to a dealer or someone that has the proper software to retrieve specific information from the immobilizer control module.

Here is the actual procedure:

Secret number, determining

If the 4-digit secret number is not known or the new vehicle key fob with the secret number is not available, the secret number must be requested from the corporate radio/immobilizer code retrieval system by supplying the 14- character immobilizer control module identification number.

- Connect VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST) and initiate instrument cluster OBD. Refer to "VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST), Connecting, Selecting Functions & Checking Control Module Versions" under "Accessories and Optional Equipment/Antitheft and Alarm Systems/Alarm Module, (Vehicle Antitheft)/Scan Tool Testing" See: Antitheft and Alarm Systems > Scan Tool Testing and Procedures > Scan Tool Testing

- Read 14-character immobilizer identification number:

Indicated on display (example only)

IMMO-IDENT No: VWZ7Z0V0066808

Hello again.

Unfortunately no. The VAG scan tool my colleague speaks of is a Volkswagen specific dealership scanner. It seems you car will have to be taken to a VW dealer or a specialty shop that specializes in Volkswagen to get the code retrieved from the immobilizer. Hope this helps and thanks again for using 2CarPros.

Hi,

The only way I would say to do it would be if the part numbers are the same. However, you will likely need to reprogram it as well.

I found a sticker behind where the stereo goes that has some numbers on it it's very faded but still readable. Do you think this could be the code I need for emergency start?

That code is for the radio itself, but it wouldn't hurt to try it. Hopefully, it will be the ticket.

Let me know if it works for you.
