I have a 89 Honda Civic LX. Recently I cleaned the engine becuase it was messy from a previous coolant leak. Now it starts fine, and idles fine, when I put in Drive, it drives fine. However when I press the gas pedal down to accelerate. It dies. If I tap the accelerator, it will get some momentum, but I cant live going 15 miles an hour. Do you know what could have caused this?

Sounds like a vacuum leak.

Is it fuel injected or carbuerated? If carb then might just need to be cleaned and rebuilt. Fairly inexpensive, but check for the vacuum leaks first. And they are pretty easy to find just follow each vacuum line and feel and listen for any suction or hissing noises.
