my car has had a slow leakage of oil for the last few weeks. I have had to put in motor oil more frequently as the oil light has come on quicker each time. Recently, i've added oil every four to five days. This morning my car died on me and now it will start but it won't stay running and there's a giant patch of oil under it. Could there be more damage than just the oil leak?

Sounds to me like a seal on the crankshaft has gone or the oil pump has failed. Either way, I suspect the oil pressure is so low that the engine shuts off to protect itself. You need to locate the source of the leak. The pump is located under the timing belt covers, is the leak coming from that area?
