Hello everyone, I have a 2000 honda civic si and I'm having problems with shifting and engaging my gears. So basically this is what happened, one day I was driving and I was trying to shift from 4th gear to 5th gear and I pressed my clutch pedal all the way down but when I tried to put it into 5th gear, it just grinded, so I just waited a few seconds and tried again but it did the same thing. And right after it grinded the second time I smelled a wierd smell. It wasnt quite a burning smell but something like it. Anyway so I just pulled over on the side of the freeway and let my car air out. And after about 10 or 15 minutes, I got back on the freeway and when I tried putting it into 5th gear it would just pop out no matter what. So I just waited until the next day. The next day, I tried 5th gear and it actually worked. It was sort of hard to put it into 5th but it worked but I had no reverse! So I just tried shifting gears with my car idling and after about and hour of just messing with the gears it finally worked. So a couple of weeks went by and I had thesame problems, it grinded from 4th to 5th again but this time I couldn't fix it. Its been a couple of weeks and i've had no 5th gear or reverse. 5th gear is difficult to engage and it just revs with I do manage to get it in. Also I my reverse is completely locked up. I can't get my car into reverse when my car is on or off and it doesnt even allow me to put into reverse when the clutch down or up. It's not like I can get into reverse and nothing happens but I can't even get it in, it's completely locked! So everyone told me it was probably a clutch problem because 5th would either pop out or just rev. But no one can explain me having no reverse. The weird thing is that all of my other gears work except 5th or reverse. So anyway, I purchased a new clutch kit, the flywheel, clutch, a bearing, the complete kit. I had a friend install it for me. Well sort of, he replace my old clutch with my new one and then bolted everything back together. But he didnt torque it ( I don't know if you need to or not) also I have no pressure on my clutch pedal and he didnt put my axles back on. But I did try shifting gears with my car off and I still cant get it into reverse and 5th is really hard to get in. I have no idea what to do. And now everyone is telling me that its my transmission. I hope not. Does anyone have any idea of what it can be? And does any one know if i'll have different results once my car is put back together? Could low fluid cause these problems? Is it my tranny? Please reply back as soon as you can. Thank you so much. Sorry for my question being so long.

Hi okman916,

You have a problem with the trans. The shift fork nternal is stuck preventing you from shifting into reverse.

The 5th gear not working could be due to worn gears. Did you check if the trans oil was low before removing the trans? The problem was most probably caused by low gear oil.
