When the car is warm the gears do not engage. I checked the fluid and it is fine. If I shut the engine off and let it sit for a second then start it again it will engage for a very short time. Also the engine seems to have a high pitch whirling sound when in neutral and I rev it a little.

HI there,

Due to the highly complex nature of automatic transmissions, you must run a number of physical tests to determine most faults, in your case I feel that there may be an internal oil leak in the high pressure side of the transmission, I suggest that you get it inspected and a report made on it condition.
