The engine went bad and we replaced it with a engine out of a 1993 Toyota pick up. We have put a new clutch in and the starter went bad and we have put 4 starters in. The starters would barely hit the flywheel and leave marks on the end of the starters.
I got a new starter for the 1993 engine and we put it in and the same thing the gear on the starter was messed up. I am running out of ideals. Can you help me please?

Thank you,

Hi,

From the description of the problem, the flywheel could be seated too far away from the starter.
Is the flywheel from the original engine or comes with the 1993 engine?
Were all the starters that went bad, of the same specification? For Toyota engine, starters have different spout length depending on which vehicle it came from.
From the seating area of the starter, measure the distance to the flywheel ring gears and compare with that of the original engine to see if they are the same.
Let us know how it goes.

Good morning Sir.

Sir, thank you for replying back to me, I was a mechanic in the Army, and I have never ran into this problem. The flywheel came with the 1993 engine, could the flywheel be on backwards and would the transmission mount up snug to the engine. On the starter the starter on the 1987 engine was put on the 1993 engine and eventually it went bad.
My cousin’s husband bought 4 new starters and they would barley hit the starter, I bought a new starter for the 1993 engine and you could hear the starter turning. The end of the gear on the starter you could see where it hit the flywheel from what I can figure it likes about  inch to engage the flywheel. They no longer have the old engine so I can check that.
Thank you for your help.

Sorry Sir, I have been down in my back and waiting for it to clear up. I trying to find something showing how to remove the transmission. It's different from changing a transmission in a tank than it is in a 1987 Toyota 4x4 pickup with a manual transmission.
Thank you for your time.

Hi,

Larry, do me a favor. Start a new thread asking for directions for directions for transmission removal. Someone will get that for you.

I ask that you start a new thread because we are trying to keep the posts specific to one topic. We do that because it is more helpful to others. I hope you understand.

I will watch for your post.

Take care of yourself.
