01 gmc 8.1 litre, increased hard starting will crank ten times, then rest, ten more, then rest, then will fire under normal cold starting. After hot seems to overload at idle and can smell fuel

Sounds like a blown fuel pressure regulator> should be on the fuel rail with a vacuum line to the intake. Remove vacuum line at reg and if any fuel is present replace the reg
