1998 GMC Sierra Driver side door lock will not open from ou

The driver side door will open/close and lock from the inside but will not open from the outside. I removed the interior panel and found a "L" shaped rod laying loose. The dimensions are about 5" by 3"and the short end of the rod has been dipped in a red rubber coating. I cannot see where this goes. The rod is about an eighth of an inch in diameter. Can you help and is there an exploded view of the lock system on line where I can see a pictorial of the lock system? Help. Thanks

Stop by the parts department of your local GM dealer, they should be able to print out an exploded view

Thanks BC for the info. I did stop by today and they did print an exploded view. It shows the part but unfortunately you cannot discern where both ends actually go. Still searching for a better pictorial.

Take the other side apart so you can see what it's supposed to look like.
