Faulty Fuel Gauge?

Originally I changed fuel pump, when I did, the floater must have come loose & I didn't know until fuel tank was put in place - gas gauge wasn't reading (arrow went passed full). I dropped tank again a couple of weeks later & re-inserted floater, I made sure it was connected this time. I put tank back in place & gas gauge still not reading. What could the problem be?

Hope the subject info helps out. I was told by a Chevy dealer parts guy it could be the sending unit. When I changed the fuel pump, I used the same sending unit even though it looked pretty worn.

Please advise.
