Acceleration/white smoke

1992 Chevy Caprice. 5.7 Liter, 8 Cyl. 149000 Mi. The car is hesitating when I'm trying to accelerate, (from a complete halt & while driving). Instead of quickly accelerating, it's kind of gradually climbing to my desired speed. And it's usually accompanied by a big puff of white smoke every so often. Any ideas on what to check for first?

White smoke is never a good sign. You have coolant in your combustion chambers. It runs bad because the plugs won't fire in water.

Remove the plugs one at a time and turn the engine over. The one with water will spray it out. Stay out of water shot.

Disable the ignition while cranking it over. Good luck
