When cold starting I have to use starter fluid most of the time. I can hear the fuel pump and after it starts it runs well. Sometimes I can turn the ignition switch on and off a few times and it will start. I have replaced the battery and had the alternator checked. This started after coming off the highway and the engine started to hesitate briefly. The next day it wouldn't start.

Welcome to the forum, use a gage and check fuel pressure. Around 60 psi. You have the spider fuel system, correct?

This issue would be the cause of the fuel pressure regulator failing. Once replaced it will make a big difference in the way this starts.
