Had to replace crank shaft and main bearings. Engine now back together. Timing marks at 6 & 12, engine rolls over but back fires thru intake, have tried changing position of the rotor in the distributor, but still will not start. There is fuel, spark
I know there are many things that could be wrong, but I am having difficulty trying to think of them all.
My son is in the middle of a rebuild of a another GM engine and he told me that the timing marks on his engine are at 12 & 12, my manual says 6 & 12, who is right?

Timing marks on the sprockets should line up through the centerline of crank and cam. Cam gear mark at 6 and crank gear at 12. What you are describing sounds like the distributer is 180 off. Bring the engine to TDC with number one on compression. Set the balancer mark at 0 degrees and point the rotor at #1. Also check you plug wire routing.

The Haines manual says to put # 4 at tdc, is it the same as #1 tdc, we have also done the 180 on the distributor. Plug wires have been double checked.
