When I start the car it smokes heavily and misfires and the smell of gas is strong. When I put a noid light on number one cylinder it stays lit. Where do I search next?

If the noid light is staying lit and not flashing at all you will want to try a different test to verify that result. For that test you just need a common test light. First connect the light to ground and probe the two contacts for the injector. Turn the key on engine off. One contact is full time power from the EFI relay The other is the switched ground from the power-train control module. When you touch the power feed the light should come on. Now connect the test light to power and gently probe again. Key on engine off neither one should light the light. The power feed won't because there will be twelve volts on both sides with no ground path (which is how the alternator light operates) If it does light the injector driver transistor has failed as a short. If it does not light up, start the engine. Probe again. The light should now flash as the injector is triggered. If it still stays on solid the reason is the same, the transistor is bad.
If it is staying on, that would be the cause of the smoking and gas smell as it is pouring fuel into the cylinder all the time.
Ow because of this it may also damage the catalytic converter. Also, you will want to change the oil and filter ASAP once you repair it as the gas will get past the rings and dilute the oil. However, one positive side effect, it should clean out and sludge or debris in the oil system.

You have the option of a rebuilt unit or trying a used one. Re-mans run about $300.00 and they take your old one as a core. You might find one online but be sure it matches the one you have numbers wise, they used a few different ones.
