I have a 1998 Mazda 626 with a 2.0L 4 Cyl. That has the LA4A-EL (Ford CD4E) transmission. I've read about the problems with the transmissions poor design and how they overheat as well as problems with the solenoids. My car was running fine, but when I stopped at a light the car shut off. I can put the car in park and start it but as soon as I put it in reverse or drive it shuts off again. I took it to a local mechanic whos put the car on the computer and that told him the lockup solenoid and the oxygen sensor are bad. He can start the car and put it in drive with the wheels on the rollers and the wheels will spin but the moment he presses the brake the car shuts off. He suspects the car is locked in first gear. He's not 100 % sure replacing the solenoid block assembly would correct the problem. Any ideas or insight you might be able to give us would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
