Belt shreds

We had to change the alternator and starter. First, the new alternator only had holes for the double anchor, not the third, single anchor. Does that matter? Second, ever since, the new belts keep shredding; yet, the old belt just squeals. Plus, the tension pulley does not seem to turn now. Where do we start checking, or do we just change the tension pulley assembly? Thanks so much in advance.

What is the VIN number of your car and the part number of the alternator you installed? Also does the belt tensor pulley itself turn if you remove the belt and try to turn the pulley by hand?

The auto parts store showed my brother three alternators that could be used on my car; he chose the one that was most like the old one. The tension pulley does not move on it is own by hand. Thank you.

If the tensor pulley does not turn by hand the the bearing in the pulley is bad. That is probably why the belt is shredding. I would start by fixing that problem and go from there I would just replace the whole belt tensor.

Hello. My brother finally removed the tension pully to find several strips of the belt wrapped inside. So, he replaced just the pully. But now it's out of alignment, and the belt keeps trying to slip. Is there a way to align it without replacing the whole assembly? Thanks for all always.

There not align able if it's out of alignment with the rest of the pulleys then replace it. Also the new alternator didn't match the old alternator?
