Yes I have a 1996 Ford Taurus 3.0 liter with 146,000 miles. I have just bought it and it sat for 2 years before I bought it. My air was running hot, so I bought some R-134a to put in but the guage said not to add. Could it be my compressor and how would I go about checking that.

First thing to do is check the high and low pressure switches. Unplug them one at a time and bypass the the plug using a paper clip the see if the compressor will engage. If they're ok, take it to a shop who does ac work and have them see whether or not it has a leak and is low on freon.
