A/C blows cold, then hot

I have a 95 Taurus SHO, 160,000 miles. The A/C will blow cold for two or three seconds and then the system begins blowing hot air after an audible "WHOOMP" from inside the dash, as of a valve or port of some sort slamming shut. As I'm sure you know, navigating the SHO motor compartment is very difficult for the amateur and expensive for the professional. Any ideas?

Do you have the eatc system? All electronic? Maybe a blend door is malfunctioning. If you have the eatc, and can get ahold of some type of service manual, that system can run some self-diagnostics on itself, initiated by pushing various button combos, not saying it will find your issue.

TW, thank you, I ran the self-test and found that it was in fact, the blend door, which is apparently not an uncommon failure in the Taurus. Unfortunately, the book pegs changing this part at 6-12 hours, you have to completely remove the steering column and dash to do it. The local shop wants $500 for the job. Since the blend door is in the correct position whenever I start the car, is there a way to disable the blend door and keep it in this position? Also, I live in Florida and won't miss the heat function, would bypassing the heater core do the trick? Been racking my brain for alternate solutions.

Thank you again!

Danny
