Shakes at high speed

What causes the steering wheel to shake when i'm driving. It begins around 40 mph and makes a noise like my brakes are are thumping when I press on the brakes?

First, check to make sure the brakes are in good condition. As far as the sound and vibration, it sounds like you have a warped brake rotor. Have those things checked and let me know what you find.
