Engine Mechanical problem
2000 Ford Taurus 6 cyl Automatic 84,146 miles

I'm trying to identify my problem BEFORE I take in for service. Took long trip over weekend. My 2000 Taurus SE 3.0L Vulcan OHS V-6 ran perfectly. Got home - parked it in garage. Next day, five minutes of driving and RPMs dropped to practically nothing, lights dimmed, for about 5 seconds, at which time the theft light came on. Then back to normal, but repeat episodes brought me home after 1/2 hour and when it would "power back up", the battery light came on also. Have replaced just about everything on this vehicle, new battery placed Aug. 2009. Any guesses on what the problem(s) are and what I need checked? I appreciate it very much!

Check battery terminals
remove check, clean and then tighten

start engine and check battery volts as engine running it should be at about 14v

if lower suspect bad alternator

with engine running check for vacuum leaks
