1999 Ford Taurus Car seems not to go in gear

My car drives fine and all the sudden it will act like I put it in Neutral. But I didnt. The rpm goes way up, The speed omiter stops working and the car reves up but doesn't want to go. Then it wiill finally start working again after a few min, or if I put it in park then back to drive. I cant afford to put it into shop. Can I fix this myself. I am a single mom/nPlease help me!

Check tranny fluid
Start and warm engine open hood and check tranny fluid with engine running
If need to add use a funnel and add fluid in the dipstick tube
If fluid ok suspect internal tranny failure
