My car is stuck in park

My car is stuck in park. If you step on the bracks the tail lights do not come on. The car part store looked it up on the computer and said it was, I think, a relay switch by the break pedal. What do you think it could be.

Hello,

It sounds like the shift lock actuator might not be functioning.
The shift lock actuator is located at the bottom of the steering column.
That actuator allows you to shift out of park when you depressed the brake pedal.
Since the brake lights are not operational as well, it could be that the brake light which sends signal to the brake lights as well as the actuator is the issue.
