My wifes has a 98 Taurus GL wagon (24 valve V-6). The shift lever is completely locked up. Is this electricaly controled or is it a cable only? What are thecorrections for this?

Believe it is cable only. My 97 is cable only. I replaced mine about a year ago.

I should add that when mine broke it did the same thing. Locked up, then it snapped. I got a replacement from a salvage yard -- and it has worked fine ever since. My advice would be to trace the cable first, see if you can visually see any reason it may be locking up. Then see if you can move the mechanism under the hood - make sure tires are chocked/emergency brake is on. I imagine it could be locked in gear too. I admit I am not a professional mechanic -- just wanted to share my experience so if it helps you, great.
