First try to listen for the 4x4 engage motor. Try this with engine started and with it off. First put window down or even have a friend turn 4x4 switch to 2 wheel then 4 or 4L while you are under by the transfer case where the engage motor is located. If the motor isnt kicking in then it could be two things to start with, either the switch that changes from 2 ta 4 is bad or the engage motor is bad, personally I havent looked at the switch in my truck but if its any thing of I would think, if the motor isnt engaging then I would try to take the switch from the dash and manually touching the leads together to see if the motor kicks in, if it does then the switch is bad if not then it is something else or another way to test switch is to put it on a light or so and see if it works
