1997 Ford Ranger changing a thermostst

What do I need to do to get to the housing to have the access to change thermostat

I'm not sure I understand your question. If you follow the upper radiator hose from the radiator to the engine, it will lead you to the t-stat housing. THere are 2 bolts that hold it on. Just remove them and the housing will come off exposing the t-stat.
