Engine Mechanical problem
1968 Ford Mustang V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic

I have a 1968 Mustang that hasn't been started in more than 20 years. I bought it out of a warehouse and the owners son said his dad drove it in and parked it 20 years ago. I haven't tried to start it up yet, but I have turned it over by hand. I've removed the spark plugs & put a socket on the harmonic balancer & the motor turns, but gets to a certain point. Then stops. I'm able to reverse the wratchet and go back to a certain point. But then it reaches a point where it sticks again. I don't want to hurt the pistons or cylinder walls by trying to fire it up and breaking through the buildup I'm assuming is present. What do you recommend I do to free up the motor? And after it's free what can I expect when I do fire it up?

Hi there,

Give the bores a really good soaking with penetrating oil, keep rocking the engine until its free, with engines sitting that long, all the seals will have dried out, the carby will need a full o/haul, brakes will need doing and there is a fair chance that as soon as you fire It up it will burn oil and not stop as the rings will have lost tension, see how you go, long lost cars like these are often an expensive re build waiting.
