2003 Ford Focus Downshifting

Every once in awhile, the car has problems downshifting from 3rd to 2nd gear or when going up a hill. Sometimes the rpms go way up when this happens. What could be the cause? Thank you

Has the check engine light come on? It sounds like a shift solenoid.

No the check engine light does not come on. I had it checked and the transmission was bad so I had it rebuilt $1400.00 thank you
