Engine will not crank but dash illuminates

My car petrol wont start, when I switch the key on the dash illuminates but try to crank it there is nothing. An EAC fail message shows on the dash and it will be flashing. Does the EAC problem cause the car not to start or crank? Or it is another problem which is there?
