Engine Performance problem
1986 Ford F250 V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic

I was thinking of replacing the mechanical fuel pump with an electric one and I want to know if it would work ok? I have had multiple problems with the fuel system like, fuel leak at the carb inlet and a bad fuel pump. Replaced both and now still smell fuel at times and get about 7 mpg. I'm still trying to find a leak somewhere and I think the new fuel pump is bad again. I used to get like 13mpg.

It'll work as long as the electric one can produce the correct fuel pressure as the mechanical one.

My 86 Ford F250 has dual tanks. Theres a switch on the dash for switching fuel tanks. Would that stop me from installing an electric fuel pump and abandoning the mechanical one? And would I need a fuel regulator?

The transfer switch should not be a problem. About the fuel pressure regulator it depends on the type of electric fuel pump use, some can require one to adjust regulating fuel pressure
