I have a 86 ford F-150 with about 200,000miles, and it has a 5.0 V8 in it.
I was driving to the corner store and the transmission was shifting just fine then on the way back home the trans would not shift into over drive, It is a 3 speed automatic trans with 1st, Drive, then over drive marked on the shifter display. The trans never made any noises and it shifts smothly.I changed the fluid and filter, the fluid looked great no metal shavings in pan or fluid when held to light and the screen was very clean, also I noticed that my alternator is not charging the battery could it be low volts causing it. And also there is no vacum module on side of trans.
Thank you for any help u can give me. And I hope the donation helps. Russel_tman

If the charging system isn't up to the job fix that first.

1986 ford f-150 4+4 200,000miles

I cheked the charging system and the batery was bad but that did not fix the trans problem, and I also forgot to mention that when the rpm and speed is high enough to shift into (3rd gaer/overdrive) the trans feels like it goes into neutral and only when the speed slows down enough it will go back into 2nd gear, Down shifting into drive does not put it back into 2nd gear just slowing down does.

Thank you for your imediate response on the last question.
