1999 Ford F-150 noise lower end of motor sometimes?

Noise left lower side of motor, on/off, but by using the "stick in the ear trick", noise is louder at the cat. Converter but can not pin point. Any suggestions?

Maybe like golf balls in can but, at a idle or a little above sometimes louder than other times. At start up ok. As it warms up gets louder, after running temp is reached very little to no sound. Trick learned from dad take broom handle make fist at end put hand at ear other end at differnt places most noise at cat. Converter?
